As a nurse advocate, I’ve seen families struggle to fight for answers and navigate a system that often overlooks aging adults. It’s why I’ve made it my mission to stand up for those who can’t always speak for themselves.

I had the honor of joining Finding Your Fierce with Carolyn to talk about what it really means to advocate, how resilience and persistence shape the way I serve, and the moment I found my voice in healthcare. If you care about making sure our seniors get the support they deserve, I’d love for you to listen.

Empathy is my superpower, but so is being stubborn, persistent, and refusing to let families feel lost in the healthcare system. I sat down with Finding Your Fierce to talk about the realities of advocacy, the power of standing up for aging adults, and why every patient deserves to be heard. Listen in.

When families are thrown into a medical crisis, it doesn’t matter what they think they know—everything changes. I’ve seen people overwhelmed by decisions, uncertain about what’s next, and afraid they don’t have a voice. That’s why I do what I do.

I joined Finding Your Fierce to share my journey from an introverted nurse with a weak stomach to someone who fights, fiercely, for aging adults and their families.

The healthcare system wasn’t built for clarity, and too often, families don’t know what to ask, where to turn, or how to fight for the care their loved ones deserve. After 40 years in nursing, I’ve seen too many people slip through the cracks simply because they didn’t have an advocate by their side.

I sat down with Finding Your Fierce to talk about why I refuse to stay silent, why persistence and resilience matter in advocacy, and how I went from being the quiet one in the corner to the one who never backs down. If you care about standing up for those who need it most, I’d love for you to listen.

Subject: What I Learned from a Patient Who Just Needed Me to Stay

Hi [Recipient’s Name],

I was just out of nursing school, working on a surgical oncology unit, when I met a 30-year-old woman in the end stages of breast cancer. She was my patient for the day. When I checked in on her, she looked at me and said, “Would you stay with me?”

Immediately, I thought to myself, I need to stay with her, but what about my IVs? What about this? What about that? I figured the best thing I could do was hurry up, get my tasks done, check in on everyone else, and then come back. But by the time I returned, she had passed away.

That moment changed me. It made such an impression on me that it really shaped how I grew up as a nurse—to never, never put the tasks or the things ahead of the people. I still think about that woman today.

I recently shared this story on Finding Your Fierce, where we talked about navigating healthcare, standing up for patients, and how small moments define us. If you’ve ever felt lost in the healthcare system or unsure how to advocate for a loved one, this episode is for you.
